Taking Care of Yourself When the World Is on Fire
The world is on fire, both literally and politically, but you are not alone. Every day, we’re bombarded with news of climate disasters and political chaos and it’s overwhelming, exhausting, and for many, deeply personal. When everything around you feels unstable, taking care of yourself isn’t just an act of self-preservation—it’s an act of resistance. Here are a few things to ideas to help navigate the ever-changing world around us:
Acknowledge the Reality (Without Letting It Consume You)
You don’t have to ignore what’s happening to take care of yourself. Instead, allow yourself to acknowledge what’s happening in the world. Then, name your emotions—fear, anger, sadness, exhaustion and set boundaries. Take in what you need to stay informed but not so much that it paralyzes you.
Prioritize Rest—Guilt-Free
The idea that we must always be ‘on’ and fighting can lead to burnout but rest is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Sleep, take breaks from scrolling and engage in activities that bring you joy. Find peace in reading, meditating, or simply staring at the sky.
Find Small Ways to Feel in Control
When the big picture feels overwhelming, focus on what you can control. This could be maintaining a morning routine, preparing nourishing meals, or even organizing your space. Small acts of stability in your personal life can counteract the external chaos. Also remember that joy is revolutionary. In times of crisis, seeking moments of happiness isn’t selfish—it’s fuel. Dance, laugh, create, love. Your ability to experience joy in the midst of hardship is an act of defiance against despair.
Lean Into Your Community
You don’t have to do this alone. Connect with people who uplift you—friends, family, or even online communities that align with your values. If you feel isolated, start small: reach out, check in, and find ways to support each other. Shared burdens feel lighter.
Lastly, give yourself grace. There will be days when you don’t have the energy to do any of this, and that’s okay. Survival is enough. Be kind to yourself in the process. Healing and resistance are not linear journeys
